UCT International Mother Language Day Celebration 2025

Celebrate International Mother Language Day at UCT!
The University of Cape Town (UCT) invites students, staff, and the broader university community to the International Mother Language Day (IMLD) Celebration on 27 February 2025 at the d-School Afrika, Middle Campus.
IMLD, officially recognised by UNESCO and celebrated globally on 21 February, highlights the significance of linguistic diversity and the preservation of indigenous languages. This year’s theme, as determined by UNESCO, is:
"The Importance of Preserving Indigenous Languages and Promoting Multilingual Education."
Join us in embracing the richness of multilingualism and cultural diversity at UCT! This event will feature:
✅ Engaging panel discussions on language-related matters, led by UCT staff and distinguished guests from the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) and the South African Centre for Digital Language Resources (SADiLaR).
✅ An update on UCT’s language policy, aligned with South Africa’s New Language Policy Framework for Public Higher Education Institutions, promulgated by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in 2020.
✅ Vibrant cultural performances, celebrating the diversity of languages and traditions within our community.
This is a unique opportunity for students and staff to contribute to meaningful discussions that will shape the future of teaching, learning, assessment, research, and communication at UCT.
📢 Be part of this transformative event! RSVP here by 14 February 2025!
