UCT Language Indaba 2024

The Multilingualism Education Project (MEP) hosted the first ever UCT Language Indaba on behalf of the university on the 12th of September 2024.

This serves to appraise the university community about language matters at UCT including the UCT Language Development Plan. The 2024 activities are detailed in this update.

IsiXhosa Literary and Performance Competition

The Multilingualism Education Project (MEP) is running an IsiXhosa Literary and Performance Competition as part of the university's language development plan. This 2024 edition of this competition is accepting poetry and monologue entries.

UCT LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT PLAN UPDATE

In 2023, the University of Cape Town (UCT), like all other 26 public universities in South Africa, successfully applied for the funds to align its language policy with the NLPFPHEIs. MEP submitted the UCT language development plan for UCT.

Mechanical Engineering IsiXhosa Glossary Launch

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has introduced the Mechanical Engineering isiXhosa Glossary, which was launched by the Centre for Higher Education Development’s (CHED) Multilingualism Education Project (MEP) on 2 November.

UCT Responds to South African Sign Language being made the 12th official language

UCT has welcomed the recent announcement that South African Sign Language has become the country’s 12th official language.

MEP staff are preparing for the USAf supported language resources audit coordinated by SADiLaR on the 31st of July 2023. UCT is one of the 26 universities participating in the audit.

South African Sign Language 12th Official Language

On 19th July 2023, South African Sign Language (SASL) was made South Africa's 12th official language at a signing ceremony held in Pretoria.

International Conference on Language, Multilingualism and Decolonization Practices 12 – 14 July 2023

International, African, and local universities converged at the Academy for Multilingualism at the University of the Free State to converse and discuss Language, Multilingualism, and Decolonization Practices in Higher Education.
