The indaba is now an annual platform to track UCT’s progress. In 2024, it introduced the policy. In 2025, it showcased best practice. In 2026, it will focus on lessons learned from the first years of implementation.

MEP successfully hosted the University of Venda and Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University on behalf of UCT as they visited on a multilingualism benchmarking activity.

UCT Celebrated its inaugural International Mother Language Day Celebration as part of its Language Development Plan and to officially launch the newly approved UCT Language Policy

The Multilingualism Education Project (MEP) hosted the first ever UCT Language Indaba on behalf of the university on the 12th of September 2024.

This serves to appraise the university community about language matters at UCT including the UCT Language Development Plan. The 2024 activities are detailed in this update.

The Multilingualism Education Project (MEP) is running an IsiXhosa Literary and Performance Competition as part of the university's language development plan. This 2024 edition of this competition is accepting poetry and monologue entries.

In 2023, the University of Cape Town (UCT), like all other 26 public universities in South Africa, successfully applied for the funds to align its language policy with the NLPFPHEIs. MEP submitted the UCT language development plan for UCT.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) has introduced the Mechanical Engineering isiXhosa Glossary, which was launched by the Centre for Higher Education Development’s (CHED) Multilingualism Education Project (MEP) on 2 November.
