Masithethe isiXhosa

This course is offered by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHED) as part of its Multilingualism Education Project and is aimed at equipping members of staff with basic communication skills in isiXhosa. The main focus of the course is on developing conversational skills. On completing the course participants should be able to converse in everyday situations and to respond to simple enquiries in their work situations. The course is offered and Beginners' and Intermediate Levels.

Details are as follows:

  • The course is offered at the beginner's level and will be offered twice, (i) March to May and (ii) August to October of each year.

  • There will be 2 one hour lecture a week, for 6 weeks.

  • In order to provide some flexibility, free lectures will take place in the lunch hour for UCT staff and students.

  • It will be offered in the late afternoon/eveing at a cost for internal and external parties. UCT staff and students who choose to take the afternoon will receive a 50% discount on the course.

  • Class size will be kept small

  • A certificate of successful completion of the course will be provided for participants who pass a simple oral examination at the end of the course.

  • For course participants who do not wish to take assessment, a certificate of attendance (requiring participation in at least 10 of the 12 sessions) will be provided.

  • The course may be offered in-house in departments or units, upon request, where there is sufficient number of participants.
