Law students are introduced to the Grootboom case in their first-year Constitutional Law course.

Even this very brief extract from the judgment contains a number of tricky quantitative concepts such as:

• 111% increase
• compounding effect of consecutive percentage increases
• growth rates.

Many students have difficulty with quantitative concepts in context, so are challenged when required to explain the meaning of the last paragraph.
