Assoc Prof Duncan Mhakure

Associate Professor

I am an Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in the Centre for Higher Education Development Faculty specialising in mathematics education – the teaching and learning of mathematics in schools and higher education, and in teacher education. As an academic, I have profound interests in mathematical knowledge for teaching, mathematical modelling, quantitative literacy, numeracy, and classroom discourses of students in both schools and higher education. In higher education, through my research projects on tutor-professional development, I designed models of tutor training aimed at improving tutors’ mathematical knowledge for teaching. My social responsiveness activities are focussed improving the teaching and learning of mathematics in schools located in disadvantaged communities using school-based in-service programmes for mathematics teachers with a focus on the use of the lesson study approach. I have  published extensively in journals, books, and conference proceedings nationally and internationally focussing on teaching and learning of mathematics in schools and higher education. Currently, I am supervising master’s and PhD students in mathematics education. I am a member of the following professional bodies: Association of Mathematics Educators of South Africa (AMESA) – National; Southern African Association for Research in Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (SAARMSTE) – Regional; Mathematics Education and Society (MES) - International; International Congress on Mathematical Education (ICME) – international; International Conference of teaching mathematical modelling and applications (ICTMA) - International; and I am the South Africa’s representative in the International Mathematics Modelling Challenge (IMMC) – International, among others.
