Hoerikwaggo's ZK Matthews Gallery buzzed with continual banter and activity as CHED's staff members gathers to do their 67 minutes of service to honour Mandela Day covering books for local schools.

In a post-event email, Acting Chair of the CHED Transformation Committee, Dr Cheryl Brown, thanked "all the CHED staff who donated books and took time in the cold and rain to assist in covering them on Mandela Day. The 188 books are headed to Lourier Primary via the “LifeMatters Foundation Literacy Programme”.

"Special thank must go to the Transformation Events Committee: Nicole, Rondine, Wilma, Mzi, Annelie and Nabeelah for their excellent organization, expert advice on dealing with sticky paper, and the cookies and cakes on the day."

"Nelson Mandela International Day" was declared by the UN General Assembly in 2009 in recognition of Madiba's birthday on 18 July for his lifelong dedication to the service of humanity.

The LifeMatters Foundation was established in 2000 to serve the children of the greater Constantia area through programmes designed "to practically equip and empower the kids in our community to stay in school and become functional, contributing members of society."Laurier Primary in Retreat is just one of the organization's several literacy projects.  LifeMatters also has programmes in Numeracy, Counselling and Life Skills.  Visit the website for more information about LifeMatters and how you can get involved as a volunteer.
