Associate Professor Janice McMillan
I am an Associate Professor in CILT, CHED. I joined UCT in 1994, first in the Department of Adult Education, and since 2000, in CHED. From 2010-2019, I was the Director of the UCT Global Citizenship: Leading for Social Justice programme. (GCP), and from 2010-2014, I was also the service-learning coordinator for Stanford University's Bing overseas study programme in Cape Town. Within UCT I am a member of several university and faculty committees including the Senate University Social Responsiveness Committee. I completed my PhD in Sociology at UCT in 2008, focusing on service learning as a form of boundary work in higher education. Although organisationally still located in the Academic Staff Development group in CILT, from 2017-2022 i was seconded to work at the institutional level as SR co-ordinator reporting to the Deputy Vice Chancellor for social responsiveness (SR). Since late 2020, I have also been involved in work on ‘decentring whiteness’ as a contribution towards UCT’s dismantling institutional racism strategy. More recently I am also working with the Design School at UCT - http://www.d-school.uct.ac.za working with them to scope a research agenda.
My teaching, research and development interests centre on working with students as educators and facilitators; higher education transformation and social responsiveness - with particular emphasis on organisational change; and university-community partnerships more broadly. I have published in leading local and international journals, as well as written several book chapters, both collaboratively and on my own. I have supervised several Masters students over the years, as well as many Hons level projects. Given that my role at UCT over the past 10-15 years has been managing programmes or working institutionally on social responsiveness, I have not been supervising students for the past few years. I would thus seek to co-supervise students interested in my areas with another colleague. A list of my publications can be found here: Janice McMillan publications
