The CHED REC has now adopted a new procedure for the submission of applications (new applications, amendments, and renewals).
How it works
Ethics clearance applications need to be submitted via UCT’s electronic research administration (eRA) system.
For guidance and eRA system-related support, see here or log a call.
For ethics-related queries, please contact the Chair of the REC, A/Prof Mary Masehela, or the Servicing Officer, Ms Ipelegeng Ntshwanti
Please note:
Ethics Clearance is valid for one year and a renewal application is required should the research not be concluded within the one-year timeframe. Please contact the REC Chairperson, A/Prof Mary Masehela, for further information on the renewal process.
Please note that, other than the months of December and January, the timeframe for a response to an application, which is complete and requires no further input by the applicant, is approximately one month from the date of submission.
Ethics Application Submission Notice
Researchers are required to notify the REC Chairperson, and the Committee Servicing Officer, Ms Ipelegeng Ntshwanti, when submitting an ethics application.
This notification must be sent at the time of submission to ensure that applications are received, recorded, and allocated to reviewers. Please note that system-generated alerts may occasionally be delayed; therefore, direct notification is necessary to avoid processing delays.
Your cooperation in adhering to this requirement is appreciated and will support the efficient processing of ethics applications.
Year-End Submission Deadline 2026:
The year-end submission deadline for the CHED REC will be confirmed and communicated in due course.
