This talk takes the occasion of the death of the German philosopher, Jürgen Habermas, to examine three visions of the University and its purposes in the light of contemporary pressures around the changing mission of the University.  It looks in particular at the idea of the University in the service of the State (Thomas Hobbes); in the service of the Economy (Habermas); in the service of Nationalism (Edward W. Said) and discusses the need to assess the University in the age of AI.
