The winner of the 2023 UCT Open Textbook Award is Nomusa Ntinga for her Interactive E-book of Physiotherapy Terminology published in April 2023.

A lecturer in the Physiotherapy Division of the Department of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, Nomusa produced her interactive textbook in collaboration with students and colleagues. It aims to teach students the terminology used in physiotherapy with practical examples and opportunities to use the terms. It also has audio/voice note guides, quizzes and language challenges where the terms learned can be put into practice as self-reflective and self-directed learning tasks outside of teaching times. Students are encouraged to use their mother tongue to unpack new anatomy terms, allowing second-language English speakers to be able to express in their mother tongue and to be authentically themselves.

Nomusa received the award from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Teaching and Learning, Professor Linda Ronnie, at the closing ceremony of the UCT Teaching and Learning Conference on 22 November. She joins a distinguished list of prior award winners who have been recognised for innovative open education activity that addresses issues related to the cost of teaching and learning materials, as well as curriculum change and multilingualism at UCT.
