Open education and the provision of free, high quality and appropriate teaching and learning materials is a necessary and powerful means of addressing social injustice in South African higher education, particularly as relates to resource access, multilingualism, curriculum change and inclusivity.

Are you a student, librarian, lecturer, educator, researcher or manager interested in joining the conversation? Maybe you have ideas or expertise that could help? Maybe you think open education is a good idea, but don’t know where to start? Maybe you would just like to listen in on the conversation?

The Digital Open Textbooks for Development initiative invites you to participate in a two-part, interactive webinar programme aimed at providing a practical, introductory overview of Creative Commons licensing and open textbook production.

Webinar 1: Creative Commons, open licensing and attribution

Date: Tuesday 7 October 2025
Time: 13:00 – 15:00
Location: MS Teams

Creative Commons (CC) and other forms of open licensing are based on principles of mutual respect for authorship/attribution and the belief that knowledge is a public good. CC licenses are critical legal and social mechanisms that enable open education. This interactive session will introduce you to the basics, try to demystify some of the concepts and inspire you about new ways in which you can contribute.

Webinar 2: Making an open textbook: The basics on scoping, authorship, student co-creation, production, quality assurance and publishing

Date: Tuesday 28 October 2025
Time: 13:00 – 15:00
Location: MS Teams

Do you want to develop your own textbook, but don’t know where to start? This workshop will provide basic guidelines on how to scope and develop textbook content, principles for engaging with students as partners and co-creators, and different aspects of resource production, quality assurance and publishing.
